Caring for Someone with Dementia: A Guide

22 August 2025

Caring for someone with dementia requires compassion, patience, and resilience. Whether you are one of our care workers in a home care or extra care setting, or a family member supporting a loved one, your role is vital. You help individuals stay well both mentally and physically while encouraging independence wherever possible.

At Clece Care Services, we provide a range of care services to meet the unique needs of our service users and support their families.

What Is Dementia?

Dementia is a term used to describe a decline in mental ability that affects daily life. It refers to a group of symptoms that impact memory, thinking, and social skills. The most common type is Alzheimer’s disease, but other forms include vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia.

Tips for Caring for Someone with Dementia

Ensure Their Home Is Safe

  • Use good lighting to prevent vision problems.
  • Remove trip hazards such as loose wires or rugs.
  • Add clear signage and labels to help with orientation.

Maintain a Routine

Set regular times for meals, bedtime, and waking up. A consistent routine reduces confusion and helps the person feel more in control.

Create Familiarity

Keep the individual in familiar surroundings. Memory books and favourite music can provide comfort. Dementia often affects short-term memory, but long-term memories usually remain intact. The Alzheimer’s Society offers a helpful “This Is Me” leaflet to record preferences and personal history.

Improve Communication

As dementia progresses, communication becomes harder. To help:

  • Speak slowly and clearly.
  • Use short, simple sentences.
  • Avoid correcting the person, as this can cause distress.

Manage Behaviour Changes

Mood swings, aggression, or confusion may occur. These behaviours often stem from discomfort or changes. Identify triggers such as noise, pain, or hunger, then address them and offer reassurance. If behaviour becomes overwhelming, seek support.

Why Choose Our Dementia Care?

Personalised Care Plans

Every person’s experience with dementia is unique. We create tailored care plans to meet individual needs.

Highly Trained Carers

Our carers receive specialist training to understand dementia and respond to emotional and behavioural changes. They provide practical care and emotional support for both service users and families.

Consistency and Routine

We know routines reduce stress and confusion. By delivering care at home, we help maintain familiar surroundings and daily habits.

Health and Safety Checks

Our plans include home safety checks, supervision, and medication reminders to reduce risks such as falls or wandering.

Promoting Communication and Positive Behaviour

Our carers use proven techniques to ease agitation and maintain a calm environment.

Legal Considerations

If you care for a loved one with dementia, consider setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney. This ensures their wishes are respected as their condition progresses. If this is not in place, the Court of Protection can appoint a deputy.

When Home Care Isn’t Enough

As dementia advances, care needs may increase. Our extra care facilities across the UK offer secure apartments with on-site support for daily tasks and emergencies.
